Found in a typical 1970’s apartment building in central Athens, the apartment was in need of a radical intervention, due to a long period of neglection and abandonment. Since most of the original features of the apartment such as the oak and terrazzo floors, the marble kitchen countertop and the small monochrome bathroom tiles were found in very poor condition, it was decided that most of them will be replaced, without disregarding the apartment’s original identity.

The main concept of the project revolves around a contemporary interpretation of the typical Athenian apartment, as the proposed textures, materials and colour palette are collaged and rearranged in several spaces of the redesigned apartment as a reference to the original ones.

The new open plan suggests a unified living and kitchen space, that breaks the thresholds of the original fragmented plan, in order to maximize space and allow more natural light in the main space. The white palette is  strategically interrupted by vivid colours, in order to intensify the entrance and circulation spaces, while green Tinos marble and yellow monochrome tiles appear as a subtle reference to the Athenian reconstruction period.
